SOUNDS of excitement and victory were heard in Temora on Tuesday when the Murrumburrah Public School Girls Austag Team were announced the winners of the Mortimer Shield.

Ten girls from Years 4 to 6 represented Murrumburrah Public School being the overall winners of 70 other public and catholic schools within the Riverina Region that competed in the Mortimer Shield, after winning all their games in the round robin rounds.

After playing three games on Tuesday, Murrumburrah Public School defeated Tumut Public School 7-3 in the nail biting grand final.

Rugby League legend and part of the Mortimer family Chris Mortimer presented the girls with individual medals and the prestigious Mortimer Shield, which the school will have in their possession for the next year.

The Girl’s Austag Team are the third names to score a place on the Shield.

The Murrumburrah Public School boy’s team were knocked out of the competition at Cootamundra last term.
