South-West Brahmans down Crookwell

3/07/2008 7:42:00 AM
Last Saturday saw the Brahmans overcome a determined but outclassed Crookwell side at McLean oval by six tries to one.

Played in good football conditions the crowd were treated to a fast open game with plenty of ball movement by both sides in the first half. The Crookwell team were starting to find the on rushing charges of the bigger and fitter Brahman forwards such as Joe Dyball, Grahame Moorby and Shannon King hard to handle and mistakes began to creep into their game with missed tackles and failing to complete their six when in possession. These errors were giving the Brahmans plenty of ball time to work with and with players like the ever consistent James Blair and Jason Pollard showing all their skills and tricks they forced Crookwell to defend their line for long periods of time. The Brahmans turned that pressure into points when “the man with the flair” James Blair collected a good ball off a set move and went into score the first of his three tries for the afternoon. Abed Atallah converted the try and the Brahmans led six points to nil. From that point on the Brahmans were never headed. Crookwell scored one try in the first session but the Brahmans scored two more tries and went to the break with a handy lead, 16 points to four.

The Crookwell Green Machine started the second half in what appeared to be a fight back mood, but it wasn’t to last. Once again the local side took control of the game and with the inclusion of Michael Quinn into the attack they had the boys from Crookwell at sixes and sevens all over the park. In the 15th minute of the second session they opened up the defence when Quinn gave a neat hand off to Nathan Schofield who with the zip that he’s renowned for went in under the posts. Abed Atallah kicked the third of his four goals for the day and the locals had raced to a 22 to four lead.

Michael Quinn continued to direct traffic for the rest of his stint on the field and as the team started to read him better in the games ahead they will most certainly reap the benefits of his experience.

The Crookwell side managed to catch the Brahmans napping when they put in a short kick off and regathered the hall, but it all came to nothing when off the sixth tackle they put up a bomb but it had too much weight on it and went dead.

The Brahmans returned to the attack and scored twice more before full time to take the final score to 32 points to four.

Point scorers for this week were: James Blair three tries and one each to Jason Pollard, John Quinn and Nathan Schofield.

This week on Sunday, July 6, the team travel to Goulburn to take on the Goulburn Exchange and that promises to be a great game.

The club was also successful this week in signing Brendan Ford who along with Michael Quinn will be very valuable players as the team makes its way to the play-offs.
